Magic Eye is a series of books published by N.E. Thing Enterprises (renamed in 1996 to Magic Eye Inc.). The books feature autostereograms (namely random dot autostereogram), which allow people to see 3D images by focusing on 2D patterns. The viewer must diverge his or her eyes in order to see a hidden three-dimensional image within the pattern. "Magic Eye" has become somewhat of a genericized trademark, often used to refer to autostereograms of any origin.

The autostereogram predates the Magic Eye series by several years. Christopher Tyler created the first autostereograms in 1979. The first Magic Eye book, Magic Eye: the 3D Guide was released in 1993. It was soon followed by sequels which were also extremely popular, and the three books spent a total of 34 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List. Several other books and videos have been released since then, and Magic Eye stereograms have been featured on postcards, mousepads, lunch boxes, and even neckties. Magic Eye stereograms are also featured in a comic syndicated by Universal Press Syndicate which appears weekly in many newspapers around the world and features a stereogram with a hidden image for readers to discover.

The Magic Eye images have a horizontally repeating pattern which differs slightly with each repetition, therefore giving the illusion of depth when each eye focuses on a different part of the pattern. The stereograms were created using a patented process that allows colorful patterns to be used in creating the final images.

Magic Eye images have also been used by children and adults for science and other purposes. Magic Eye stereograms are frequently used by orthoptists and vision therapists in the treatment of many binocular vision and accommodative disorders

Stereograms (also known as Magic-Eye), a new way of looking at the world.

I remember perfectly the moment when I saw my first stereogram.
I’ve been starring at my PC monitor for about one hour without seeing anything, my eyes were hurting and I was afraid to blink not to lose the “magic moment”.
Finally, in the end, I saw the magic, and it was worth the effort.
I never believed that something like this was possible simply by looking at a picture. In deed you can say you have a magic eye ;-)

For those of you that have trouble seeing magic eye images there are a couple of pointers .

Bring the stereogram image really close to your eyes (until you touch it with your nose). At this distance your eyes cannot focus on the image and they look somewhere behind the image. Now, slowly push the image away from you, while trying to keep the eyes off focus. At some point you will see the hidden image.

Another method is to take an object and put it behind the image (about half of meter behind it). Now, focus on the object behind the image while keeping the eyes looking at the image.

Do you remember how is the feeling when you are drunk? Your eyes don't look at the object arround you, but rather through them. Well, this is actualy what we are trying to achive (look through the object, not get drunk, loll). If you can manage to get your eyes off focus, at some point you will be able to see the hidden image.

If you're not train to look at stereograms, this might take you some time. First time I've looked at a stereogram it took me like an hour to finally be able to focus the eyes correctly to see the 3D image.

Autostereogram
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An autostereogram is a single-image stereogram (SIS), designed to create the visual illusion of a three-dimensional (3D) scene from a two-dimensional image in the human brain. In order to perceive 3D shapes in these autostereograms, the brain must overcome the normally automatic coordination between focusing and vergence.

The simplest type of autostereogram consists of horizontally repeating patterns and is known as a wallpaper autostereogram. When viewed with proper vergence, the repeating patterns appear to float above or below the background. The Magic Eye books feature another type of autostereogram called a random dot autostereogram. One such autostereogram is illustrated above right. In this type of autostereogram, every pixel in the image is computed from a pattern strip and a depth map. Usually, a hidden 3D scene emerges when the image is viewed with the correct vergence.

Autostereograms are similar to normal stereograms except they are viewed without a stereoscope. A stereoscope presents 2D images of the same object from slightly different angles to the left eye and the right eye, allowing the brain to reconstruct the original object via binocular disparity. With an autostereogram, the brain receives repeating 2D patterns from both eyes, but fails to correctly match them. It pairs two adjacent patterns into a virtual object based on wrong parallax angles, thus placing the virtual object at a depth different from that of the autostereogram image.

There are two ways an autostereogram can be viewed: wall-eyed and cross-eyed. Most autostereograms (including those in this article) are designed to be viewed in only one way, which is usually wall-eyed. Wall-eyed viewing requires that the two eyes adopt a relatively parallel angle, while cross-eyed viewing requires a relatively convergent angle.
