As it was found out, Columbus had a map of the earths which he so searched, and that this map now was in hands of the pilot. Admiral Piri Reis has looked through this map, and in 1513 he has made the map of the world based on that map and other antique drawings from his collection.
In 1929 group of historians has found out half of map drawn on a skin of a gazelle and till now turned into tube. The map content was amazing: it was focused at the western coast of Africa, east coast of the South America and northern coast of Antarctica.

. The researches made Sea cartographers of the USA, similar, specify that the map is drawn as visible of space. It also represents internal areas about which navigators could not know, and shows the mountain ridges of Antarctica hidden under ice on thousand of years.

For a rational and scientific look at the Piri Reis map, I'd suggest this link: http://www.uwgb.edu/dutchs/PSEUDOSC/PiriRies.HTM

As the authors there state, margin "notes on the map explain that the map was synthesized from about 20 maps, many of which were captured from Spanish and Portuguese ships in the Mediterranean. It was also supplemented by accounts given by captured Spanish and Portuguese sailors."

Piri Reis doesn't show the remarkable detail of Antarctica as it lies below the surface as many claim -these claims are usually replays of the claims of opportunists like von Daniken, Hapgood, and -more recently- Hancock.
